Au Gratin Potatoes

Priscilla's Au Gratin Potatoes

I always loved Au Gratin Potatoes, but homemade is the best when compared to box. It is worth the work to make homemade and who doesn't love cheesy potatoes! A family favorite!

Yield:  6-8

Cook time:  90 minutes

Ingredients:

3 tbsp salted butter

3 tbsp all purpose flour

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp ground black pepper

2 cups 1% milk (2% is ok)

1 - 1 1/2 cup shredded mild cheddar cheese

1 tbsp yellow onion, finely diced

1 1/2 lb yellow potatoes

Instructions:

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare a 8 x 8 baking dish. Add the potatoes to the dish. (see note) Now mix the flour, salt, and pepper together in a small bowl.

2.  In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the onion and cook until slightly translucent. Stir in the flour mixture slowly and stir until smooth. Slowly add the milk while stirring.

3.  Bring to a light boil. Cook while stirring periodically for 2 minutes or until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat.

4.  Stir in the cheese gradually until melted.

5.  Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes then mix it together well. (see note) I add a little extra shredded cheese on top sometimes.

6.  Cover and bake for 1 hour. Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is beginning to brown slightly. Serve!

Notes:

You can add the potatoes to the saucepan if it is large enough then pour it all into the baking dish.
